What's Changing in Deodorant Packaging Right Now (and Why We Went With Metal)

Deodorant packaging is having a moment. Not the product inside the tube — the tube itself.
For years, the format barely changed: a plastic stick, twist up from the bottom, toss it when it's empty. That's starting to shift, fast. Brands are moving to paperboard tubes, compostable push-up sticks, refill pods, glass jars. Some of that is genuine innovation. Some of it is a plastic problem finally catching up with an industry that's been packaging deodorant the same way since the 1950s.
Why now
A few things are pushing this at once.
Regulation is catching up. Europe's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation is pushing brands toward less plastic and more reuse, and it's shaping what gets manufactured well beyond the EU. When a regulation that size moves, packaging suppliers move with it.
Plastic recycling was never as good as the label implied. Most curbside programs can't actually process the mixed-material tubes deodorant has shipped in for decades — cap, barrel, and liner are often different plastics fused together, which makes them close to unrecyclable in practice even when the label says otherwise. That's finally becoming common knowledge instead of fine print.
Refillable is turning from a nice-to-have into an expectation. Consumer interest in refill systems has climbed fast enough that it's stopped being a sustainability footnote and started being something brands compete on.
The result: a lot of new deodorant packaging right now, and not all of it built for the job.
Why we didn't go paper
Paperboard tubes are having a real moment, and we get the appeal. They feel light, they feel green, they're an easy swap from plastic. But cardboard and moisture don't mix well, and a deodorant tube spends its whole life in a humid bathroom getting handled with damp hands. Paper tubes can soften, lose their shape, and get less hygienic over time in exactly the environment they're used in. That's a real trade-off, not a minor one and it's not one we were willing to make just to check the "sustainable" box.
Toss a paperboard tube in a toiletry bag and you've got a second problem. It's not built for getting jammed between a phone charger and a pair of shoes. Corners crush, seams split, the whole thing gets soft and dented before it's even halfway used. A deodorant that can't survive a carry-on isn't actually solving anything for the person using it daily.
Why metal
Metal solves the problem paper can't: it doesn't care about humidity. Non-porous, doesn't soften, doesn't interact with what's inside it the way some plastics can over time. It holds its shape and holds the formula, full stop.
It also survives being thrown in a bag. Metal takes a beating and keeps its shape — no dents that turn into rips, no soft spots from getting tossed around next to your other toiletries. If you're the kind of person who packs for a trip and doesn't think twice about where the deodorant lands, that's the tube built for you.
It's also genuinely recyclable — not "technically recyclable if your city has the right facility," but aluminum specifically, which is one of the few materials that can be recycled indefinitely without losing quality. That's a real end-of-life story, not a marketing one.
And it looks like what it is: minimal, durable, no wasted material. That's the whole BPM philosophy in a tube. Nothing extra, everything intentional. A recyclable metal tube isn't a trend we jumped on. It's just the option that didn't ask us to trade performance for a good story.
The bottom line
Packaging is changing because the industry finally has to reckon with a few decades of plastic it can't actually recycle. Some of the new options are real progress. Some are a different kind of waste wearing a green label. We picked metal because it does the job, keeps the formula stable, holds up in a bathroom, and actually gets recycled when you're done with it, without asking you to trust a claim you can't verify.
