How to Switch to Natural Deodorant (Without the Awkward Transition Period)
Share
If you've used conventional antiperspirant for years, your body has adapted to it. Antiperspirants work by physically plugging your sweat ducts with aluminum compounds, stopping something your body is built to do. Stop using them, and your body needs time to adjust. That window is usually somewhere between one and four weeks, and it varies person to person.
During that stretch, you might notice:
- More sweating than usual, as the ducts that were plugged open back up
- Odour that's stronger or different than what you're used to, as your skin's bacteria rebalance
- Some underarm sensitivity
None of that means the deodorant isn't working. It means your body's doing exactly what it's supposed to do once you take the plug out.
Making the Switch Easier
1. Time it right. Start during a lower-pressure stretch if you can such as a slower week, a break from the gym, whatever gives your body room to adjust without a big presentation riding on it.
2. Stay consistent. Apply every morning, even on days you don't think you need it. Consistency is what gets your underarm bacteria to settle faster.
3. Keep things clean. Wash daily with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser. It clears out odour-causing bacteria without stripping your skin, which makes the whole adjustment period shorter and easier.
4. Reapply if you need to. In the first couple of weeks, a midday touch-up on a high-activity day is normal. It doesn't mean the formula's failing you.
5. Start with the right formula. If your skin runs sensitive, a baking soda-free formula from day one makes the whole thing easier. Irritated skin and a thrown-off pH just slow everything down.
What to Expect
Most people are through the adjustment within one to four weeks with some faster, some slower. Sweat and odour tend to be most noticeable early on and settle as your body catches up. If you're still uncomfortable well past the month mark, that's worth a closer look at the formula, not something to push through.
A Note on Sweating
Natural deodorant doesn't stop you from sweating, and that's the point. Sweating is how your body regulates temperature. It's not something to block, it's something to work with. A good natural deodorant neutralizes odour. It doesn't shut down a system your body needs.
BPM uses magnesium hydroxide and tapioca starch to absorb moisture and neutralize odour, without interfering with what your body's actually trying to do. Browse the full Natural Deodorant collection to find your fit.
You Won't Want to Go Back
The adjustment period can feel discouraging in the moment. Most people who push through it land somewhere better with less irritation, and the simple upside of knowing exactly what's in the tube.
